How to Increase Your Site Keyword Rankings in Google

Once you have generated your keyword ranking report, you will know keywords/keyword phrases that your website is currently ranking for.

The goal, of course, is to increase those rankings. All other things being equal, a placement higher in the search engine query results will result in more people seeing your listing, and consequently your site listing will get more clicks, bringing you more organic (non-paid) traffic to your site.

How do you increase your rankings? This is foundational SEO, and the basic components of an effective SEO strategy have not changed very much over the years:

High-Quality Content. The only way that search engines can figure out what your site is about is to scan and analyze the content on your site's webpages. That's why you need content to rank. But not just any content. It needs to be content that is relevant, and which provides real value to your site visitors. Don't let Google tag your site as one that presents a "poor user experience" because it lacks useful content. And you don't have to blow your budget - you can add content gradually, increasing the value of your site over time.

Link Building. Search engines derive much of their power from looking to see what sites may be linking to yours. Simply put, sites that are being linked to from other sites that are valuable in themselves ("authority" sites) have a better chance of ranking higher than sites that don't have (or have fewer) links. This makes link building a critical part of your overall SEO strategy.

Why You Should Use a Google Keyword Rank Checker

Keep in mind that SEO (Search Engine Optimization) strategies are not always "static" or "set it and forget it" in nature. As your SEO campaigns kick in and your site begins to gain traction (ranking improvements) you may to adjust your campaigns as you move forward in time (targeting other keywords, other internal pages, etc.).

You can - and should - use a good multiple keyword rank checker on a regular basis to monitor the movements of your most important keywords in order to get feedback on the impact that your SEO campaigns are having.

And if you are providing SEO services for clients, showing them proof of upward keyword rankings can help with client retention, which is the key to growing any business. With a keyword rank checker online means that you can even point your own clients to this page and they can run their own keyword ranking reports anytime they want.

Keyword Rank Checking: Frequently-Asked-Questions

How do I read my SEO keyword rank checker position report?

A typical report, when displayed, will provide you with the following information –

  • Keyword: The first column will contain a list of keywords/keyword phrases that your site is currently ranking for in Google. "Ranking" for a keyword means that your site URL shows up - somewhere - in the SERP's (search engine results pages) for the tracked keyword.
  • Rank: For each keyword search phrase/word, the current placement in the SERP's is given. For example, "1" would mean that the URL listed (last column) is found in position #1 (very top of organic listings, excluding paid ads which may appear above it) for that search term.
  • Monthly Volume: This is the total monthly search volume for that search term. Higher monthly search volumes can bring higher traffic to your site, but there may be more sites trying to grab that search volume (more competitive search terms) which may require more aggressive SEO tactics.
  • URL: Which of your site pages is ranking for that search term? It could be your home page, or an internal page. The "URL" column will give you the exact URL of the page that is ranking. You should carefully monitor these URL's as it is possible for a single web page to rank for many different search terms. These are your "power pages" (especially when there are high traffic volumes) and are where your "quick wins" in SEO can be found.

How can this information be used?

Perform your own site analysis. Using our online keyword rank checker tool, you can quickly and easily check to see which pages are doing well in the SERP's. As stated above, these are the pages you can concentrate on first, to give you (or your client) quick wins. You should also look at pages that are ranking for keywords but are currently doing poorly (lower in the listings). These pages are excellent pages for our Posirank site audit analysis service. Our staff can take a deep-dive into those pages to see what should be done to improve their ranking.

What are your competitors up to? Don't forget that you can use this Google keyword rank checker to check up on sites other than your own. Simply input the URL's of your top competitors into the tool and you'll get instant feedback on just what search terms competing sites are ranking for. Armed with this information, you can do a full-on competitor analysis. Where are your competitors outranking you? Those are pages you should improve (amount and quality of content, backlink quality and removing any technical problems like slow-loading code, etc.).

You may even discover URL's of pages that have negative things to say about you. If you have been the victim of a campaign of negative publicity, you should determine which sites are doing this, as well as develop strategies to mitigate their impact.

How does this tool compare with Google's Standard Keyword Planner? Are the results the same?

No they will not necessarily yield the same information. In the opinion of some, the standard Google Keyword planner, that Google itself provides, has several limitations and even drawbacks. First, Google's tool was created specifically to help its advertising customers using the Google Adwords ™ platform to help them in targeting the best keywords for their PPC (Pay-Per-Click) ad campaigns. The needs of those doing keyword research for organic SEO campaigns are different, and our Posirank tool reflects that.

An important difference is that Google's free tool "modifies" the data that it reports back to you. If you are a low spender for PPC ads, their tool will restrict the information it displays, or if you do too many keyword analyses. Google will also not report the exact search volume, but "rounds" the number to the next grouped level in the report. For larger traffic volumes, this means that the number reported may differ from the real search volume by thousands of searches!

My site needs a lot of work to get it ranking better, but honestly, I just don't know where to start first. Do you have any kind of a comprehensive guide that will help me to know what to do next, what is the high-priority stuff to do first, etc.?

Yes, we certainly do. You can go to this blog post to find an easy-to-follow SEO checklist, that can be used with both new as well as existing sites. 99% of the sites that we see could see significant ranking improvements if these areas are addressed - and you won't need to spend a dime of your money with us to get this stuff done.

Keyword research is confusing to me, and I know it's an important part of SEO. Do you have staff that can work with me to understand what I am seeing in the reports? Could they help me to understand how to put together a comprehensive SEO strategy? Do you charge extra for that?

Welcome to the Posirank advantage! At Posirank we don't think it's right to just throw a bunch of service offerings out there and let people "guess" and hope that they will see results. We want to help you to see measurable results. We want every dollar you spend with us to be spent well.

So we always have staff available - whether you are one of the big dogs or just a smaller operation - to help you by providing strategizing help. There is never an extra charge to use our staff. Here's some proof we can help you - testimonials from our current customers.

Any other suggestions on how to get the most from the keyword rank checker?

Yes, we have a couple. Firstly, as stated above one of the most important things you can do is to check up on your competitors. Run the keyword checker report for as many competitor sites you need (it's free and there is no limit on the number of times you are allowed to run the report). The competitors that you need to target are the sites that are surfacing in the SERPS ahead of yours.

When you are looking at the reports for your competitors, pay attention to pages they have that are ranking highly (positions 1-5 in the SERPS) and note the keyword(s) that page is ranking for. Then look at your site's report – do you have any pages that are ranking for those keywords? If yes, whose site is ranking higher – your page or your competitors? If your competitor is ranking a page higher than you are, take a look at their page. Is it longer? Is it better written – or does it have better quality content? How many backlinks does that page have? How many does your page have? Depending on what you find, you may need to improve the content (length and/or quality) of your page or get better quality backlinks pointing to it.

A second recommendation: SEO is not a static thing, and that includes keyword position rankings. They can fluctuate as search engine algorithms change or as competitor websites update. This means that you should regularly rerun your reports, and especially when you notice that your website has moved down in the rankings as compared to your competition.

Finally, keep in mind that keywords vary in how difficult it will be to get them ranked at the top. Keywords that are frequently searched for (high volume of searches monthly) may attract the attention of many competitors who are trying to rank for that keyword – making it more challenging to get your site to the top. As an alternative to that, you may want to develop content that targets lower search volume keywords. While you will get fewer searches (and consequently fewer clicks to your site) on those keywords because they may be of less interest to your competition, they may be much easier to rank for.
